Welcome to the Mount Stuart Scout Group website. We are a fun and active group in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Our group is part of the Wellington District.

Mount Stuart Scout Group was established in 1959, and has been providing activities for the youth of Mount Stuart and surrounds for over 50 years. Since 1987 the group has admitted both girls and boys, and from 1988 to 1990 we ran two Cub Packs. At various times in our history, we have had all five sections of scouting.

We meet at the Mount Stuart Memorial Hall on Byard St between Raymont Tce and Darling Pde, Mount Stuart, TAS, 7000.

Scouting Sections

The Mount Stuart Scout Group has four sections: Joeys, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers. Our Venturers (15-17 year olds) meet on Tuesday nights at the Lenah Valley Scout Hall, Joey Mob (5 to 7 year olds), and Scout Troop (11 to 14 year olds) meet on Wednesday Nights, and our Cub Pack (8 to 10 year olds) meet on Thursday Nights during the school year.

Why would you wish to come along to Scouts at Mount Stuart?

  • Is it a social occasion for youth? Partly but it is much more.
  • Is it a physical outlet for youth? Partly but it is much more.
  • Is it a chance for youth to grow and mature? Yes, but so much more.
  • Is it an alternative to school? No but it is a good adjunct to school.

Leaders of Scouts go through a comprehensive training program involving 36 hours of online (computer based) training 3 weekend training camps and a project taking approximately 10 hours. At the end they have VET Certificate IV qualification in Leadership and VET Certificate IV qualification in Frontline Management. There is also the ongoing requirement for leaders to attend some training each year to maintain and expand their abilities.
So, are the leaders trained and qualified? You bet.

In scouting, we attempt to get the most out of any child. For each child that is a different level. We try to help the child grow into a mature, understanding, trustworthy and compassionate person able to contribute to the community and make the most of their lives in whatever they pursue.

We teach life skill like risk assessment, first aid, leadership, team work and responsibility.

We give children the opportunity to grow outside their parents shadow whilst still being in a safe and controlled environment.

We offer the opportunity to push their limits and conquer their fears.
We offer them the chance to make new friends and pass on their knowledge whilst gaining knowledge from others.

But the old adage still applies: You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.

We can offer all these opportunities and provide skilled and dedicated leaders, but we can’t do the growing for the child. The more the child participates in the scouting events and offerings, the more they will get out of it, as will the parent.
